On this day 45 years ago, (July 29, 1976), I was sitting in my lifeguard stand in Ocean City, Maryland. One of my friends came to me and said, “Your dad called the house and needs to talk to you real bad.” So I left the stand and went home and called thinking something was wrong. My dad said “Get on the train. You start work in Nyack, New York this afternoon.” I certainly did not have the correct clothes to wear on my first day. When the train stopped in Baltimore, there my dad was with all my suits and on I went to New York. I got there just in time for dinner with my new boss…who I had never met. I didn’t know what I was hired to do or how I was going to do it with no training. My new boss told me I was leaving tomorrow for Chicago to be a customer service manager for 6 months there for the bag division for that area for St Regis Paper Company. Remember, I had no training. I got to my hotel and it was the George Halas Hotel of the Chicago Bears. It was an all men’s hotel which was really weird. I had to take a bus to work each day. Funny thing, I never thought to ask what I was going to be paid. I was so lucky my dad and mom put a few hundred dollars in a suit pocket. Remember, back then you wore a suit to work each day and we had to wear very nice hats to work. After 15 days I got my first paycheck. My total pay was $400 every 15 days before taxes. Boy did I splurge that weekend.
Long story short, after 45 years I am still in the same industry.
I need to write a book.
